Session #2 with Ricardo at my house and Cancuns Mexican Restaurant.

Topic/Skill: Irregular verbs in the past tense (e.g. to do > did, to go > went, etc)/. Paraphrasing and summarizing text. Comprehensive reading strategies and answering comprehension questions. Modal auxiliary verbs.

Feedback provided to the tutee: I helped Ricardo know when to use the past tense and how to conjugate irregular verbs such as "to do". I explained to Ricardo how to paraphrase a sentence by switching a few words or phrases. I taught Ricardo when to use "a" vs. when to use "an" and explained that the determinant is the phonetic sound of the next word (i.e. vowel sounds (an) vs. consonant sounds (a)). I also taught Ricardo other indefinite articles.

Lessons:

Irregular Verbs in the Past Tense

Irregular verbs do not follow the standard "-ed" pattern and must be memorized individually. They change form in various ways.
Paraphrasing:
  • Restate text in your own words.
  • Clarify or simplify the original text.
  • Read, identify main points, rewrite, and compare.
Summarizing:
  • Condense main ideas into a shorter form.
  • Provide an overview of key points.
  • Identify main ideas, eliminate less important information, write concisely.
Modals express ability, possibility, permission, and obligation. Common modals: "can," "could," "may," "might," "must," "shall," "should," "will," "would." They are followed by the base form of the main verb and do not change with the subject.
