July 4th, ThursdayOnline Session #4 with Do Jun
Topic/Skill:
4th of July "cultural learning".
Differentiating between states (use of predicate adjectives) and verb phrases (E.g. I am excited. vs. The dog excited the owner.).
Predicate adjective. Predicate adjectives are adjectives that follow a linking verb and describe the subject of the sentence. Here, "excited" follows the linking verb "am" and describes the subject "I."
Verb phrases, dependent verbs (to stress, to interest)
Predicate Adjectives vs. Attributive Adjectives:
Comparison: Predicate adjectives follow a linking verb, while attributive adjectives are placed before the noun they modify.
Example: "The happy dog barked." (attributive adjective) vs. "The dog is happy." (predicate adjective)
Predicate Nominatives vs. Predicate Adjectives:
Predicate Nominatives: These are nouns or pronouns that follow a linking verb and rename the subject.
Example: "She is a teacher." ("teacher" is a predicate nominative)
Exercises: Differentiating between predicate nominatives and predicate adjectives in sentences.
Feedback provided to the tutee: Told him he had an excellent understanding of predicate adjectives. He was unsure of how to use the verb "to stress" so I clarified how we can use this verb in a sentence. To explain, I told him that stress is a dependent verb which means it is usually attached to other words to create or change its meaning. Next, during our discussion of attributive and predicate adjectives, after Do Jun showed me his ability to differentiate between attributive adjectives and predicate adjectives, I applauded his ability. Finally, I explained to Do Jun Predicate Nominatives and told him the meaning of the word nominative (i.e. relating to nouns), I evaluated his ability to form sentences that use the predicate nominative and then the verb form of the nominative. (e.g. She is a teacher. vs. She teaches English)
Lessons: Differentiating between states (use of predicate adjectives) and verb phrases (E.g. I am excited. vs. The dog excited the owner.). Predicate Adjectives vs. Attributive Adjectives. Predicate Nominatives vs. Predicate Adjectives. Verb phrases, dependent verbs (to stress, to interest).
