Feedback provided to the tutee: Wei informed me that everything had gone well with her application to the Master’s program and thanked me for my suggestions. When she sometimes struggled to understand Ana’s verbal directions, I used the game pieces on the board to explain a second time. Additionally, Ana and I helped her with the pronunciation of the word “knight,” a type of special card you can draw which is annoyingly common and sometimes not helpful.
Lesson(s) about tutoring and/or the tutee you learned: The first time trying a new task or activity is always difficult and intimidating. Catan isn’t necessarily an extremely complex game, but it certainly seemed that way to us uninitiated players. You have to be patient, and expect a few rounds of trial and error before things seem more manageable and you are reminded of your own competence and ability. This has been my experience starting new classes every semester, and I have no doubt the challenge is multiplied for international students.
