Topic/Skill: Speaking (How to Play Catan)
Feedback provided to the tutee: Ana taught Wei and I (and another student from Ana’s University) how to play the strategy board game Catan. Neither of us had played it before. When she struggled to find the right word to explain a particular rule or procedure, I helped her with her vocabulary. Two examples were the words “adjacent” and “obligation.”
Lesson(s) about tutoring and/or the tutee you learned: Similar to the lesson with prepositions, it is often easier to explain something if you have some sort of visual aid. For example, it is easier to explain the rules of a complex game when the board has already been set up and can be gestured to than when you are only reading text from the rulebook. I imagine this is why the rulebook contains so many diagrams and illustrations, not just written explanations.
